Opened since 1945, La Macarena Entertainment Center was built as a bullfighting arena. Nowadays, it’s a major scenario for many things to do in Medellin, and where a number of shows are presented the whole year.
La Macarena underwent a major reform in 2003 that enabled its transformation in a multiple stage, covered with sunroof and a 38 meter diameter arena; available for all kinds of events ranging from concerts, circuses, fashion shows, livestock fairs, to religious activities and sports such as rodeo, beach volleyball, tennis and boxing, retaining its facilities for bullfights and that kind of traditional shows.
La Macarena Entertainment Center can sit up to 14,000 spectators in its modern and recently renovates premises.
The corporation that has been in charge of the Macarena Entertainment Center for over 15 years is named Cormacarena. In this time Cormacarena has made a significant contribution in the area of health to the poorest social sectors, generating valuable resources for the San Vicente de Paul Hospital, since its annual economic gain is deposit into the hospital’s accounts.
The Festival of La Macarena is the main massive event held in Medellin in the first two months of the year. Besides bringing entertainment and joy for residents and visitors, Cormacarena makes a significant contribution to the regional economy at the beginning of the year. Thanks to the influence of the bullfighting fair, Cormacarena creates lot of jobs in various sectors of the economy, and allocates significant resources through local and national taxes.
La Macarena is a source of regional and national tourism to the city and it projects to the country and the world the image of a peaceful, cheerful, enterprising, hospitable and friendly Medellin.
After the renovation of the old bullring into the new La Macarena Entertainment Center, Cormacarena serves also as promoter of all kinds of artistic and recreational activities.
