One of the preferred things to do in Medellin by locals and visitors is going to watch a play in one of the city’s theater locations.
The Aguila Descalza Corporation is a non-profit organization that promotes the performing arts, audiovisual production, the creation of their artistic theater group, created by Carlos Mario Aguirre and Cristina Toro, and other national and international artists.
Its building is headquarters of many cultural, architectural and tourist attractions in Medellin.

Carlos Mario Aguirre created the theater company El Aguila Descalza (Barefoot Eagle) on September 21st, 1980. He was the only permanent actor until 1985, when Cristina Toro entered the group.
During these 30 years of existence the group has performed more than 30 stage productions, 25 national tours, 15 international tours and has produced five plays in DVD format.
They have managed to convene more than three million viewers around their work, in the main cities of the country and abroad. They broke all theater attendance records in Colombia, with works such as: Pais Paisa (Paisa Country), Medio Medellin (Half Medellin), Trapitos al Sol(Dirty laundry), Pecao Mortal (Mortal sin), Colcha de Retazos (patchwork quilt) , Vida de Perros (Dogs’ Life), Cosas de la Vida (Things of Life), El Sueno del Pibe (Boy’s dreams), La Patria Boba (Silly homeland), Historia Medica (Medical History), San Gardel de Medellin (Saint Gardel of Medellin), Ambiente Familiar con Cantaleta (Family atmosphere with nagging), Llevando del Bulto (Wearing the Package), among others.

With capacity for 500 spectators, the theater’s premises are a beautiful mansion, part of the city’s architectural heritage, which offers permanent programming and a museum, exhibiting a collection of artworks, paintings, drawings and collages by Carlos Mario Aguirre and other national and international artists.
