Six pools, a huge three slides pool, a canopy that ends in a semi-Olympic pool and a sauna, make the Aeroparque Juan Pablo II the largest water playground area of Medellin and it’s one of the preferred things to do in Medellin by locals and visitors.
The Aeroparque is set just beside the Olaya Herrea airport and is an ideal space for those looking for some relaxation, playing sports or simply getting away from the routine of the city.
Pope John Paul II landed in 1986 in Medellin Olaya Herrera Airport. For this papal visit, the Municipality of Medellin made some improvements to the air terminal, which in that season was destined to disappear, because they had built another more modern airport in the town of RioNegro, which also served Medellin. The idea was to convert the old airfield into a park for the city and end of all air operations in this area.
However, after a lot of discussion, a consensus was reached so as to complete both: build the park and maintain the aerodrome by better adapted to modern aircraft requirements.
Finally Medellin won by both sides: kept the airfield, which eventually proved to be extremely useful for the region, and the park.
