Medellin Flowers Festival 2012
Medellin Flowers Festival 2012 – Colombia´s most fragrant and colourful yearly celebration. Colombia is the world´s second largest exporter of cut flowers and during this ten days celebration, locals and tourists use the innocent beauty of the blossom as an excuse to celebrate life, nature and rich Paisa culture. This year the festival took place from 3rd – 12th August, and a full programme was available on the Festival´s official website.
The fair is made up of over 140 events. The most famous of these is the flower bearer’s parade (silleteros parade), for which rural flower farmers, called silleteros, make elaborate floral arrangements on giant circular contraptions that they carry on their backs. These mobile displays can weigh up to 70 kg´s and measure up to 5 meters in diameter. As many as 70 different types of flowers are used to make a single ´silleta´, and the patterns made represent the silleteros history, land and culture.
- The biggest outdoor horse parade in the world. 7000 local cowboys stroll down the street showing off their finest horses and seemingly their finest women while they´re at it.
- The classic car parade, during which many drivers dress up in a costume related to their immaculate antique automobile.
- The Trova Festival is a competition of improvised poetry battles except instead of gangsters from Brooklyn rapping over a beatbox it´s between farmers from Colombia singing over acoustic guitars.
- Every night during the fair there are several big music concerts in which people dance and party to a mix of genres including reggaeton, vallenato, salsa, electro and acoustic
